SIAM Hosts Workshop to Boost Skills for India’s EV Sector

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) held a workshop focused on improving skills for India’s Electric Vehicle (EV) industry. The event, called “Charging Ahead – Empowering an EV-Ready Workforce,” aimed to identify skill gaps in the sector. It featured prominent speakers, including Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, the Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel.

The SIAM workshop started with a lamp lighting ceremony, followed by the release of a report titled “SIAM EV Talent Landscape in India: Bridging the Skill Gap for 2030.” This report, created in partnership with Deloitte, was unveiled by Chief Guest Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, the Union Minister of Heavy Industries & Steel, along with industry leaders and experts. It outlines the skills needed for the electric vehicle (EV) sector by 2030, focusing on 40 key technical areas like EV batteries and software integration.

Mr Prashant K. Banerjee from SIAM highlighted the importance of supporting India’s EV goals through economic growth and environmental initiatives. In his keynote, Minister Kumaraswamy emphasized the need for training to build a skilled workforce for the growing EV market. He also mentioned the new Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024, which aims to boost EV adoption with a budget of INR 500 crore.

Guest speakers, including Mr Sudhendu J. Sinha from NITI Aayog, noted that developing skills is essential for transforming India into a global EV manufacturing hub. Dr. Hanif Qureshi from the Ministry of Heavy Industries echoed this sentiment, highlighting SIAM’s efforts in identifying skill gaps.

Industry leaders discussed the need for a trained workforce, with estimates suggesting that 1-3 lakh skilled professionals will be required to meet EV targets by 2030. The workshop concluded with a strong call for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a sustainable and skilled EV workforce, reinforcing SIAM’s commitment to advancing the sector.
