Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd has announced the establishment of a dedicated wagon manufacturing facility in Kharagpur, West Bengal. The project marks the company’s strategic diversification into the rail infrastructure sector and aligns with its five-year capital expenditure plan.

The plant will be developed through Ramsarup Industries, a step-down subsidiary of Shyam Metalics. The facility will be constructed in two phases, with Phase I enabling an annual production capacity of 2,400 wagons, and Phase II doubling output to 4,800 wagons per annum. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence by March 2026.

The site benefits from connectivity via two National Highways and proximity to a major port, ensuring logistical efficiency. The facility will also leverage Shyam Metalics’ existing infrastructure, including a railway siding, captive power generation, and raw material integration from the company’s primary steel operations.

The plant is engineered for modular expansion and is capable of manufacturing multiple types of rolling stock, including flat, open, box, covered hopper, tank, and specialized wagons. A Uni-Flow manufacturing layout will be adopted to enhance production efficiency. Additionally, the facility will incorporate rooftop solar panels and provide on-site accommodation and essential amenities for its workforce.

The company aims to source equipment domestically, reinforcing its commitment to India’s self-reliance initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on sustainable practices, with renewable energy integration and efficient resource utilization forming core components of the operational design.
