Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd (SMEL) one of India’s leading integrated metal producers, has announced the commissioning of a new Greenfield Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) in Jamuria, West Bengal. This modern facility is part of the company’s long-term growth strategy aimed at expanding its product offerings and strengthening its footprint in both domestic and export markets.

The Cold Rolling Mill has been set up under Shyam Metalics Flat Products Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned step-down subsidiary of SMEL, and began its trial run on September 9, 2024. With a total capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year, the new plant will manufacture pre-painted galvalume coils (PPGL) and galvanized iron/steel coils (GI/GL)—essential materials used across housing, infrastructure, and industrial applications.

The project involves a total investment of ₹603 crore, of which ₹346 crore has already been deployed, with the remaining ₹257 crore to be utilized in the coming months. This move reflects SMEL’s commitment to scaling up its value-added product portfolio while aligning with government policies that promote industrial development and infrastructure growth.

“Our entry into cold rolling production reflects our continued focus on innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainable industrial development,” said Brij Bhushan Aggarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of SMEL. “The Jamuria facility strengthens our ability to deliver superior steel solutions and supports our broader ambition to be a key contributor to India’s economic and industrial progress.”

Strategically located in eastern India, the facility offers significant logistical advantages, particularly in serving the underpenetrated colour-coated sheet segment in the region. The expansion is expected to add 8% to 10% to the company’s revenue and EBITDA over the next two years, ensuring rapid return on investment and long-term value creation.

The new plant also supports national initiatives such as affordable housing under PMAY, warehousing, and industrial infrastructure development, while contributing to environmental goals through improved efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. Shyam Metalics aims to achieve optimal capacity utilization at the plant within the next 24 months.

This development further strengthens SMEL’s position as a major player in the Indian steel industry, adding significant capabilities to its existing portfolio in long steel products and ferro alloys. The company has a strong presence in West Bengal and Odisha, and with its listing on Indian stock exchanges in 2021, SMEL now commands a market capitalization exceeding ₹22,500 crore.

Headquartered in Kolkata, Shyam Metalics is among the largest producers of ferro alloys and holds a leading position in sponge iron capacity in India. The company operates across the full steel value chain, offering both intermediate and finished products to a diverse customer base. This expansion not only marks a key milestone in SMEL’s growth journey but also reinforces its role in building a more resilient, sustainable, and self-reliant steel manufacturing ecosystem in India.
