Shibaura Machine has launched the VM-450A(5), a new precision machining center developed for high-load machining applications in the automotive optical components and medical parts sectors in North America and Japan. The new machine adds to Shibaura Machine’s machining center lineup and incorporates technologies and manufacturing expertise developed through its UVM series of ultraprecision machining centers. The VM-450A(5) is designed to provide greater machining flexibility while maintaining high levels of precision.
The machining center combines three linear axes driven by linear motors with a high-precision two-axis rotary table powered by direct-drive motors. This configuration enables simultaneous five-axis machining, allowing users to machine a blank workpiece through to its final shape without changing setups. The arrangement is designed to improve productivity and reduce the time associated with multiple machining operations.
The VM-450A(5) is equipped with a bearing spindle capable of reaching a maximum speed of 40,000 rpm. It uses the HSK-E40 tool holder standard, which is widely adopted for high-speed machining of small workpieces. The combination of high spindle speed and cutting rigidity allows the machine to perform both roughing and finishing operations in a continuous machining process.
Shibaura Machine has also incorporated several internally developed software and measurement technologies. These include FormEye, an imaging-based tool geometry measurement system; VectPath, a tool path vector correction function; and ShapeEye, an imaging-based workpiece measurement system.
The technologies are intended to reduce dependence on individual operator skills and support labour savings. Software and programs developed for the UVM series can also be used with the VM-450A(5), providing continuity for users familiar with the company’s ultraprecision machining systems.
While the primary target markets are automotive optical components and medical parts, Shibaura Machine plans to expand sales of the new machining center into press die manufacturing and precision parts machining. The VM-450A(5) will make its public debut at JIMTOF2026, the 33rd Japan International Machine Tool Fair, scheduled to be held in Tokyo from October 26 to 31.
With its combination of five-axis machining, high-speed spindle technology, automated measurement and software functions, the new machining center is designed to support manufacturers requiring precision, productivity and greater flexibility in machining small and complex components.
