Setco Automotive Limited, one of India’s largest manufacturers of medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) clutches and a leading supplier of truck components, has announced that its subsidiary, Setco Auto Systems, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. This collaboration will focus on joint research and innovation in automotive technology, marking an important step in strengthening industry–academia partnerships for future mobility solutions.
VNIT Nagpur, established in 1960 as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering and recognized as an ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2002, is one of India’s premier institutions in engineering, architecture, and science. Known for its strong research orientation, the institute has consistently nurtured talent and innovation in technology-driven fields.
The MoU between Setco Auto Systems and VNIT focuses on driving collaborative research in advanced automotive technologies. Key areas of exploration include next-generation drivetrains, friction facing technology, electric mobility, and sustainable vehicle solutions. These projects aim to address the evolving demands of the automotive industry and contribute to the development of cleaner, more efficient mobility systems.
As part of the agreement, a dedicated Clutch Research Laboratory will be established within the Mechanical Engineering Department at VNIT. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for innovation, enabling joint efforts in product development, advanced testing, and the design of cutting-edge automotive systems.
The partnership also emphasizes improving existing clutch systems. By focusing on performance, durability, and lifecycle efficiency, Setco and VNIT aim to deliver solutions that not only meet industry requirements but also set new benchmarks in reliability and sustainability.
In addition to research and development, the collaboration is designed to benefit students at VNIT. They will gain practical exposure to industry-level projects, access advanced testing infrastructure, and take part in internships that bridge academic knowledge with real-world applications. Mentorship from Setco’s experienced R&D professionals will further enhance their learning and skill development.
Overall, the MoU is intended to foster a strong link between academia and industry. By combining VNIT’s academic expertise with Setco’s decades of manufacturing and engineering experience, the collaboration will accelerate innovation, nurture young talent, and contribute to the advancement of the automotive sector in India and beyond.
Commenting on the partnership, Harish Sheth, Chairman and Managing Director of Setco Automotive Ltd, said “Research and innovation form the backbone of Setco’s journey. Our collaboration with VNIT Nagpur is a milestone that brings together the best of academia and industry. By combining VNIT’s technical expertise with our decades of experience in clutch manufacturing, we aim to develop breakthrough technologies that set new benchmarks in performance, durability, and sustainability. This initiative also provides a valuable platform to nurture young engineering talent, giving them practical exposure and preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the automotive industry of the future.
