Seoul Semiconductor Takes Top Spot in Global Display LED Market

Seoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:046890), a leading player in the opto-semiconductor industry, has secured the number one position in the global backlight market for the first time. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the company as it leads the market with a notable presence in the LED sector.

According to data from market research firm Omdia, Seoul Semiconductor captured a 16.5% share of the global backlight LED market in 2023 based on revenue. This accomplishment underscores the company’s strong performance and strategic positioning in the display LED industry.

Seoul Semiconductor is renowned for providing LED products and optical solutions across various applications, including lighting, automotive, and display technologies. The company specializes in offering customized LED solutions for TVs, monitors, and automotive applications.

It leverages advanced technologies such as thermal dissipation, local dimming, and optical designs based on its proprietary WICOP technology, a no-wire, no-lens LED innovation. This technology enables miniature sizes and high efficiency, making Seoul Semiconductor a preferred supplier for the top ten global automotive clients. As a result, the company has solidified its standing in the automotive display market and garnered significant attention worldwide.

Kim Hong Min, Director of the Display Department at Seoul Semiconductor, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation, stating, “We have secured 18,000 patents, which is quite remarkable in the LED industry, by investing nearly KRW 100 billion, or approximately 10% of annual revenue, in R&D. We will focus on opto semiconductors and maintain our top position in the display sector through constant technological development and innovation.”

In addition to this success, Seoul Semiconductor, along with its subsidiary Seoul Viosys, is set to participate in the 2024 K-Display Exhibition at COEX, Korea, starting August 14. The company plans to showcase its diverse range of solutions, including micro-LED display technology. Seoul Viosys has also achieved a leading position with the largest market share in the global UV LED sector.
