Sembcorp Industries, based in Singapore, has officially launched its 588 MW solar power project in Oman, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy efforts. The inauguration ceremony was led by Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, a member of Oman’s royal family and the second son of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.
This project, the Manah 2 Solar Power Plant, is Sembcorp’s first greenfield renewable energy venture in the Middle East and also the largest utility-scale solar farm within the company’s global portfolio. The solar farm is expected to supply clean energy to around 60,000 homes, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Vipul Tuli, Sembcorp’s CEO for the Middle East and Chairman for South Asia, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “The launch of the Manah 2 Solar Power Plant is a key step in supporting Oman’s transition to a more sustainable future. It also strengthens our partnership with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company. This project is aligned with Oman’s Vision 2040 and contributes to the country’s renewable energy objectives.”
Singapore’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr Maliki Osman, praised the project’s early completion, noting that it began operations four months ahead of schedule. “The Manah 2 Solar Power Plant will play a pivotal role in Oman’s efforts to meet its renewable energy and net-zero emission goals,” he stated.
The solar plant is backed by a 20-year, 500 MW power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, which is responsible for all electricity procurement in Oman. Spanning 6.8 million square meters, the facility features over 1 million bi-facial photovoltaic solar panels, designed to capture sunlight efficiently for optimal energy production.
Sembcorp’s proprietary digital energy management platform, NetZeroOS, will be integrated into the plant to enable real-time monitoring and predictive analytics. Additionally, in August 2024, Sembcorp held a groundbreaking ceremony for its 160-acre green ammonia plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, which will produce 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually for export to Japan.
The company operates a diverse portfolio of power and renewable energy assets, including solar, wind, and thermal power, and is at the forefront of the global transition to clean energy. In India, Sembcorp plays a significant role in renewable energy generation, with a strong focus on wind and solar projects.
With its commitment to sustainability and innovative solutions, the company is driving the transition to a low-carbon future while ensuring energy security and economic growth. Through its integrated approach to energy and urban development, Sembcorp continues to create long-term value for stakeholders worldwide.
