Sealmatic India Ltd is strengthening its focus on the nuclear energy sector as India prepares for a significant expansion in nuclear power capacity. The company sees long-term opportunities for specialised mechanical seals used in critical systems across nuclear power plants.
Mechanical seals play an important role in equipment such as primary coolant, reactor coolant, auxiliary feedwater and emergency core cooling pumps. These applications require high levels of reliability, testing and quality assurance because the components operate in critical environments.
India currently has around 8.8 GW of nuclear capacity and has set a target of approximately 22 GW by 2032, with a longer-term ambition of reaching 100 GW within two decades. The expansion is expected to create additional demand for specialised equipment and components used in nuclear facilities.
Sealmatic has been developing its nuclear capabilities over several years rather than entering the segment solely in response to the current expansion plans. The company has invested in research and development, testing, engineering and quality systems to meet the requirements of nuclear applications.
A key milestone has been its accreditation to ISO 19443, a quality management standard specifically designed for organisations involved in the nuclear supply chain. The certification supports Sealmatic’s efforts to supply specialised mechanical seals for critical nuclear applications.
The company is already supplying indigenously manufactured mechanical seals for nuclear applications. However, nuclear projects typically involve lengthy testing, qualification, commissioning and execution cycles. As a result, development and supply opportunities can take considerable time to translate into revenue. Sealmatic is also exploring international opportunities and is engaged in discussions with European equipment manufacturers. This could provide opportunities for its nuclear sealing products in overseas markets.
The company is developing additional indigenous technologies for nuclear applications with guidance from the Department of Atomic Energy and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. Following a development order, Sealmatic is also investing in additional seal types intended for upcoming nuclear plants.
Thirumalai Chandran, Assistant Vice President – Nuclear Sales, Sealmatic India Ltd, said the company has focused on building the engineering, quality and manufacturing capabilities required for demanding nuclear applications. He added that ISO 19443 accreditation and continued investment in indigenous technology position the company to participate in India’s nuclear expansion as well as international opportunities.
Nuclear energy is one part of Sealmatic’s wider industrial business. The company manufactures mechanical seals for industries including oil and gas, refineries, petrochemicals, chemicals, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, thermal power, marine, aerospace, pulp and paper, and food and beverage. Sealmatic also sees opportunities arising from industrial expansion, solar energy, water infrastructure and data-centre cooling.
The company aims to achieve double-digit revenue growth in its domestic and international nuclear business over the coming years. Its strategy is focused on developing specialised technology and manufacturing capabilities that can serve both nuclear and other demanding industrial applications.
