Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has secured a major defence export order from the Government of the Sultanate of Oman for the construction and supply of a modern naval training ship for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO). The vessel is expected to be delivered within 18 months and will support advanced naval training and maritime operations.
This milestone order highlights India’s growing capabilities in indigenous shipbuilding and reinforces the country’s emergence as a global maritime manufacturing hub. It also strengthens long-standing bilateral relations and maritime cooperation between India and Oman.
The training vessel will measure 104.25 metres in length, with a beam of 13.88 metres and a displacement of up to 3,500 tonnes. It will be equipped with modern classrooms, training offices, accommodation facilities, and an auditorium designed to provide a comprehensive learning environment at sea for up to 70 officer cadets. The ship will also feature advanced navigation and communication systems, along with the capability to conduct helicopter operations.
Commenting on the development, Rear Admiral VK Saxena (Retd), CEO of Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited, said the contract reflects SDHI’s technical expertise and ability to deliver vessels that meet international standards. He added that the confidence placed by the Royal Navy of Oman reinforces the company’s commitment to quality, innovation, and performance in shipbuilding.
The order comes at a time when Indian shipyards are expanding their global footprint, supported by policy initiatives from the Ministry of Defence (Defence Production) under India’s broader maritime vision. The project aligns with India’s Amrit Kaal vision and underscores the country’s growing role as an exporter of indigenously designed and built vessels.
