Schneider Electric has secured a contract to automate the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant in Mumbai, the largest of its kind in India. This facility processes 2000 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water, playing a crucial role in Maharashtra’s initiative to provide clean water to 22 million people.
The plant will help address the low recycling rate of wastewater in Maharashtra, which currently stands at just four percent. The implementation of extensive automation in wastewater processes will enhance recyclability, reduce waste, and improve overall efficiency.
Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure solutions will streamline and automate the plant’s operations, ensuring high levels of security and efficiency. The company began its involvement during the inspection phase, working closely with the plant to integrate its digital solutions. The EcoStruxure platform will provide comprehensive power and process automation, including tools such as the M580-EPA Automation platform, Altivar Process Drives, power quality solutions, and more.
Deepak Sharma, Zone President of Greater India and MD & CEO of Schneider Electric India, emphasized the importance of sustainable water management. He stated, “The need for smart and efficient water systems is urgent in India. Through this initiative, we aim to improve efficiency and sustainability in water and wastewater management, supporting the country’s growing demands.”
Arvind Kakru, Vice President of Industrial Automation at Schneider Electric India, highlighted how this project sets a benchmark for future water treatment initiatives, noting the importance of digital technologies in improving operational safety and efficiency. Yogen Lal, CEO of Welspun Enterprises, praised the collaboration with Schneider Electric, emphasizing the project’s role in advancing water treatment solutions and supporting Mumbai’s water accessibility goals.
Once completed, the Bhandup plant will be the largest single water treatment facility in the region, processing up to 4500 MLD. The project aligns with Schneider Electric’s ongoing support for the Indian government’s efforts in promoting sustainable water management through the adoption of advanced technologies.
Schneider Electric’s purpose is to create impact by enabling everyone to maximize energy and resources, bridging the gap between progress and sustainability for all. With a mission to be the trusted partner in sustainability and efficiency, Schneider Electric continues to embrace diversity and inclusion, guided by its commitment to a sustainable future.
