Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy technology and sustainability solutions, has introduced the second phase of its Green Yodha initiative with the launch of the “One Unit Mission,” a nationwide campaign encouraging every Indian household to save at least one unit of electricity each day. The campaign was inaugurated in New Delhi by Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, alongside actor and sustainability advocate Bhumi Pednekar and other distinguished guests.

The initiative seeks to encourage citizens to adopt simple energy-saving practices in their daily lives, helping reduce electricity consumption and support the country’s long-term sustainability goals.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised the role of citizens in shaping India’s energy future. She said that Delhi’s path towards sustainable and resilient growth begins with responsible energy use. According to her, saving even a single unit of electricity each day can contribute meaningfully to national progress and environmental protection.

India’s rapidly expanding economy continues to drive higher demand for electricity across homes, industries, commercial buildings, data centres, and manufacturing facilities. While increasing generation capacity remains important, efficient energy use is becoming equally critical. Reducing unnecessary consumption not only lowers environmental impact but also helps avoid the need for large investments in new power infrastructure.

Studies indicate that every rupee saved through energy efficiency can eliminate the need for approximately three rupees of spending on new electricity generation and supply systems. In this context, the energy that is conserved becomes the most economical and sustainable resource available.

Deepak Sharma, Zone President, Managing Director and CEO of Schneider Electric India, noted that India is entering a decade of significant economic expansion that will require substantial energy resources. He said the key challenge lies not only in producing more electricity but in using it wisely. According to him, if every household in the country saves one unit of power daily, the collective impact would be comparable to removing millions of vehicles from roads or planting billions of trees.

Rajat Abbi, Vice President – Marketing at Schneider Electric India, highlighted the importance of making sustainability measurable and actionable. He said that when individuals monitor their energy consumption, they naturally become more mindful and reduce usage. The One Unit Mission, he added, aims to transform awareness into consistent everyday habits.

India has already made notable progress in improving energy efficiency. During the financial year 2023–24, national programmes such as PAT, UJALA, S&L, SLNP and CAFÉ together saved 53.6 million tonnes of oil equivalent energy and avoided 321 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. These efforts also reduced energy costs by approximately ₹2 lakh crore, accounting for nearly six percent of the country’s primary energy supply.

However, the next stage of progress will require greater participation from households and smaller businesses alongside industry. The One Unit Mission complements existing government initiatives focused on efficient appliances and cooling technologies while supporting the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s call for stronger action at the state level.

Through Green Yodha 2.0, Schneider Electric aims to unite government, industry, and citizens in a shared effort to make energy efficiency a national movement. The campaign highlights that India’s sustainable energy future will depend not only on generating more power, but also on using it responsibly.
