Schaeffler AG has been honored with the globally recognized Hermes Award for its innovative actuator platform designed for humanoid robots. The award was presented during the opening ceremony of Hannover Messe 2026 on April 19 by Dorothee Bär, in the presence of Friedrich Merz.

The Hermes Award recognizes outstanding technological innovations that demonstrate significant industrial relevance. This year’s selection emphasized the integration of mechanical engineering with artificial intelligence. Schaeffler’s actuator platform stood out for its high level of integration, modular design, and suitability for scalable production.

The platform has been specifically developed for use in humanoid robot joints, where actuators play a critical role, accounting for a substantial portion of total system costs. By addressing efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, the solution supports the advancement of humanoid robots toward large-scale industrial deployment.

Georg FW Schaeffler, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, stated that the recognition reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to innovation and engineering excellence. He emphasized that the actuator platform builds on decades of technological expertise while supporting emerging growth areas such as robotics.

Klaus Rosenfeld, Chief Executive Officer, highlighted that the award acknowledges both the engineering teams and the broader strategic focus on motion technologies. He noted that actuator systems, particularly when combined with artificial intelligence, are central to enabling the next generation of robotic applications.

Schaeffler’s actuator platform includes rotary actuators capable of delivering precise and powerful motion in key robotic joints such as shoulders, elbows, and knees. The system integrates efficient electric motors, power electronics, and high-precision encoders, with flexible configurations including planetary and strain wave gears. An innovative design approach incorporates the bearing directly into the rotor, reducing installation space by approximately 20 percent and lowering overall weight, while maintaining high torque performance.

To meet growing global demand, Schaeffler plans to begin series production of these components within the year. Leveraging its extensive manufacturing expertise, the company aims to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions with scalable production capabilities. The actuator platform and additional robotics innovations are being showcased at Hannover Messe 2026, highlighting Schaeffler’s role in advancing automation and intelligent motion technologies for industrial applications.
