Schaeffler India Limited, a global leader in motion technology, has officially opened its fifth manufacturing plant in Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu. This new facility is dedicated to producing powertrain and chassis components, as well as cutting-edge technologies. The inauguration was attended by key leaders including Georg FW Schaeffler, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Family Shareholder at Schaeffler AG, along with other senior executives from Schaeffler India and Schaeffler AG.
Spanning 16,500 sqm, the new manufacturing facility aims to meet the increasing demand in India’s automotive sector. It will focus on the production of both traditional and electrified powertrain technologies, such as planetary gear systems, hybrid transmission components, and other emerging innovations tailored to the Indian market. In addition, the facility will significantly boost the company’s production capacity for transmission components, supporting Schaeffler’s global growth ambitions and long-term objectives in advanced automotive technologies.
Matthias Zink, CEO of Powertrain & Chassis at Schaeffler AG, emphasized India’s importance to the company, noting that the new facility will help the company expand its manufacturing footprint and further localize production. He added that this move will enable Schaeffler to better meet rising market demands and strengthen its presence in the Indian market. Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and CEO of Schaeffler India, highlighted the company’s dedication to enhancing its production capabilities in India to address both current and future market needs, particularly in the transition toward electric mobility.
The Shoolagiri plant is part of Schaeffler India’s broader investment strategy, which has seen a ₹1,700 crore commitment over the past three years (2022-2024), surpassing the initial ₹1,500 crore target. The investment supports new product lines for powertrain and e-mobility solutions, as well as large and medium-sized bearings for industrial applications. The facility is also designed with a strong focus on sustainability, incorporating green initiatives such as energy-efficient equipment, rainwater harvesting, and a zero liquid discharge system. These efforts align with Schaeffler’s global sustainability framework and vision to create a world-class manufacturing hub.
Additionally, Schaeffler India’s growth strategy includes strengthening its presence in the digital automotive aftermarket through the acquisition of KRSV Innovative Auto Solutions Pvt Ltd (Koovers), a B2B e-commerce platform. With these advancements, Schaeffler India is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge and continue capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the evolving motion technology landscape.
