To promote innovation and sustainability in the engineering industry Sandvik Coromant’s School of Manufacturing Excellence celebrated its fifth graduating class certification. In partnership with the Government of Maharashtra, the school offers advanced metal-cutting training to bridge the skills gap. As of now, 1,137 students have graduated, with 807 securing jobs in manufacturing companies. The curriculum includes technical skills, CNC machining, and practical training.
Sandvik Coromant, a global frontrunner in metal cutting, has proudly issued certifications to the fifth group of graduates from its School of Manufacturing Excellence. The graduation event was held on October 19, 2023, where students received their official recognitions at the school’s facility in Aundh, Pune. This session concluded with 219 students completing the program, and impressively, 115 of them have already embarked on their careers at esteemed manufacturing firms such as Tata Motors and Cummins India.
Established in 2018 through a collaborative effort between Sandvik Coromant and the Maharashtra Government, the School of Manufacturing Excellence stands at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Pune. Its mission is to grant individuals, who might otherwise not have the chance for higher education, access to advanced learning.
With the expertise of SkillSonics as a knowledge partner, the school imparts advanced metal cutting techniques to bolster students’ skill sets and enhance their job prospects. To date, the school has seen 1,137 students complete the curriculum, with 807 embarking on careers across various manufacturing firms.

The curriculum is designed to arm the youth with essential manufacturing skills, encompassing basic workplace practices, material technology, metrology, technical drawing, workshop computations, along with CNC machining and programming. The rigorous assessment process requires students to demonstrate proficiency in all subjects to secure their certification.
Commitment at the Sandvik Coromant School of Manufacturing Excellence involves six hours weekly, with a comprehensive mix of theoretical and hands-on training, delivered by industry experts in a 30:70 theory-to-practice ratio. The practical component demands students to produce a piece based on a provided technical drawing, independently operating CNC machines.
Dignitaries present at this year’s graduation included Kiran Acharya, Managing Director and CFO of Sandvik Coromant India, and Sunil Joshi, President of Sandvik Coromant. They were joined by Obhijeet Chakraborty, Head of Facility Management and Sustainability, and Roshni Acharya, CSR Specialist at Sandvik Coromant. At the event, graduates showcased the innovative products they crafted using their newly acquired skills from the program.
Kiran Acharya highlighted the program’s intent, noting its significance in promoting continuing education for the youth, particularly for those less likely to pursue higher education. He underscored the program’s role in bridging the skills gap in a country where over 65% of the population is below 35 years.
Sunil Joshi congratulated the newest cohort of graduates, emphasising that with the swift advancement of manufacturing technologies, the School of Manufacturing Excellence is equipping the country’s future engineers with the necessary expertise to excel. He extended his best wishes to the graduates for their forthcoming endeavours in the manufacturing sector.
