Sandvik Coromant Enhances Recycling Program for Customers in Thailand and Singapore

Sandvik Coromant supports Thai and Singaporean customers with buy back scheme

Sandvik Coromant is furthering its sustainability efforts with an improved tool buyback initiative for customers in Thailand and Singapore. The program, an expansion of its global buyback initiative, is designed to simplify the recycling of worn carbide tools, promoting material reuse and advancing circularity within the supply chain. Manny Valenza, Sales Cluster Manager for Southeast Asia at Sandvik Coromant, shares how the company is supporting these efforts.

For decades, Sandvik Coromant has been dedicated to the recycling of cemented carbide. This commitment began in 1997 when the company acquired Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten, a leading producer of tungsten powder and carbide, and launched its buyback program, which has become a core element of its production cycle. Customers can sell their worn-out tools to Sandvik Coromant, where the materials are recovered and repurposed to create new cutting tools, closing the loop in the manufacturing process.

The reclaimed carbide undergoes a purification process that restores the material’s original properties, while other elements like cobalt are responsibly managed and recycled. Sandvik Coromant accepts tools from all manufacturers in its recycling program.

With a series of upgrades introduced in December 2023, the program now offers a more efficient, data-driven recycling process. Customers can access an online portal to receive immediate price quotes for their used tools, schedule pick-up times, and order recycling boxes in advance. Additionally, the portal provides environmental impact data, showing how much carbon emissions have been reduced through their recycling efforts.

To simplify the logistics, Sandvik Coromant has partnered with regional carriers to handle the transportation of tools, making the process as seamless as possible. The goal is to encourage more customers to recycle by offering them a clear financial incentive while highlighting the environmental benefits.

“We’re proud to work with Dana Spicer in Thailand and a key oil and gas customer in Singapore,” said Valenza. “By participating in our buyback program, they are actively contributing to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprints.”

Sandvik Coromant collects used carbide tools and processes them at its recycling facility in Austria, where the materials are used to produce new tools. In addition to the environmental benefits, customers receive certificates and financial compensation for their recycled carbide, reinforcing their commitment to a circular economy.

“Many don’t realize that up to 95% of a used carbide insert can be recycled,” Valenza explained. “Our enhanced buyback scheme provides an easy, efficient way for customers to meet their sustainability goals while benefiting economically. It’s a win-win for both business and the planet.”

Sandvik Coromant continues to lead the way in sustainable manufacturing, helping customers achieve greater efficiency, reduce waste, and promote circularity in the production process. With over 80 years of experience in metal cutting and machining, Sandvik Coromant is committed to driving innovation and fostering a more sustainable future.
