Samsung Electronics is set to inject an additional ₹1,000 crore into its production facility located in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, as confirmed by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa during a recent assembly session. Sharing the update on social media, the minister highlighted that this renewed investment reflects Samsung’s continued confidence in the state’s industrial ecosystem and its workforce.
The announcement, however, comes against the backdrop of continuing labour unrest at the facility. Workers affiliated with the Samsung India Workers’ Union (SIWU) recently staged demonstrations in Sungavarchatram, calling for the reinstatement of 23 suspended colleagues, adherence to a wage agreement, and implementation of a five-day work schedule. The union, supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has issued a new strike notice—weeks after a previous strike concluded on March 7.
The dispute dates back to September 2024, when over 1,200 workers launched a sit-in demanding better pay, improved working conditions, and formal recognition of SIWU, which at the time was awaiting registration. That protest came to a close on October 16 following intervention by state authorities, with employees returning to work the next day. Samsung’s latest investment aims to further strengthen its manufacturing capabilities in India, even as the company navigates complex labour negotiations at the site.
