Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest steel manufacturer, has provided approximately 45,000 tonnes of steel for the upcoming Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. The event, set to take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 25, will see the company’s steel play a crucial role in the construction of various temporary structures.
The steel supplied includes a range of products such as chequered plates, hot strip mill plates, mild steel plates, angles, and joists, which will be used in building pontoon bridges, temporary steel bridges, passages, substations, and flyovers to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The Public Works Department, Uttar Pradesh State Bridges Corporation, and Electricity Board are among the key customers for this supply.
SAIL had also contributed steel for the Mahakumbh Mela in 2013, reinforcing its continued support for such large-scale national events. The company takes pride in its contribution to enhancing the nation’s infrastructure and promoting its rich cultural heritage through such significant projects.
While the company remains committed to national development, it reported a 31% decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 897.15 crore for the September quarter of 2024, driven by lower income. This compares to a net profit of Rs 1,305.59 crore during the same period in 2023. SAIL’s total income decreased to Rs 24,842.18 crore, from Rs 29,858.19 crore in the previous year, while its expenses reduced to Rs 23,824.07 crore from Rs 27,768.60 crore.
