Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has delivered 16,000 tonnes of steel for the construction of the world’s tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir, with the Bhilai Steel Plant contributing 12,000 tonnes, as reported by an official on Friday. On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first train service to the Kashmir Valley and launched several development projects, including the world’s highest railway bridge and India’s first cable-stayed arch bridge.
An official from Bhilai Steel Plant remarked, “Bhilai Steel Plant, along with other SAIL plants, has supplied 16,000 tonnes of steel for this remarkable project, including plates, TMT bars, and structural steel. This is a proud achievement for SAIL and BSP.”
The 1.3-kilometre-long bridge stands 35 meters taller than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and has been engineered to endure wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and the strongest earthquake forces. SAIL’s steel plants contributed 16,000 tonnes of steel, which included 6,690 tonnes of TMT products, 1,793 tonnes of structural steel, and 7,511 tonnes of steel plates, hot strip mill products, and chequered plates for the bridge’s construction.
Of the total, Bhilai Steel Plant provided 12,432 tonnes, including 5,922 tonnes of TMT steel, 6,454 tonnes of plates, and 56 tonnes of structural steel. SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, and Bokaro Steel Ltd supplied the remaining steel.
