Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied critical-grade steel for two significant naval platforms—INS Ajay and INS Nistar—reinforcing its contribution to India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing. According to an official release, SAIL provided specially engineered DMR-grade steel plates for INS Ajay, recently launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), and INS Nistar, commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) in July 2025.

For INS Ajay, the eighth and final ship in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series, SAIL supplied the full requirement of high-strength steel. This ensured the vessel’s structural stability and enhanced stealth features vital for its operations.

The company also delivered the complete set of specialized steel plates for INS Nistar—India’s first domestically designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV). Developed by HSL, INS Nistar is set to undertake deep-sea diving missions, submarine rescue tasks, and long-duration maritime patrols.

“SAIL remains a cornerstone in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, supporting naval preparedness with every shipment of specialized steel. Our contribution reflects the larger vision of strengthening national capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission,” the company said in its statement.

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of India’s largest steel producers and a key player in the country’s industrial growth.
