On March 4, 2024, a momentous step was taken in India’s defence sector as Saab initiated the construction of its first Carl-Gustaf® manufacturing facility outside of Sweden. This groundbreaking ceremony in Haryana marks a significant milestone, with Saab setting up a new venture, Saab FFVO India Pvt Ltd, to spearhead this ambitious project. This establishment is a result of receiving the green light for 100% foreign direct investment, showcasing a remarkable instance of international cooperation and trust.

Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s business area dynamics, expressed immense pride in this strategic expansion, stating, “Constructing our first facility outside Sweden for Carl-Gustaf, a weapon deeply integrated with the Indian Armed Forces, is a monumental step. We are eager to commence production of our top-notch, now entirely engineered and manufactured in India, product.” Echoing the sentiment of a deepening Sweden-India partnership, Håkan Jevrell, State Secretary for Foreign Trade, Sweden, remarked, “This is a landmark day for both Sweden and India. Strategically positioned in the Reliance MET City, Jhajjar, Haryana, the upcoming facility benefits from the state’s vibrant industrial ecosystem, filled with capable partners and a skilled workforce. This venture aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, as Saab commits to engaging local suppliers and incorporating state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, including advanced sighting technology and carbon fibre winding. The aim is to produce the Carl-Gustaf M4 for the Indian armed forces and potentially supply components for global users.

The Carl-Gustaf system, a cornerstone of the Indian Army since 1976, is renowned as a primary shoulder-launched weapon. This new factory underscores Saab’s dedication to enhancing India’s defence manufacturing capabilities while fostering self-reliance in defense technology. Specializing in military defense and civil security, Saab develops advanced technology solutions to meet the evolving needs of its global customers. The company’s product portfolio includes fighter aircraft, surveillance systems, submarines, and radar systems, among others.
