Saab and HAL Strengthen Defence Ties with Laser Warning System Collaboration

Saab, a global leader in defence and security, has signed an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to manufacture the Laser Warning System-310 (LWS-310) in India. This partnership builds on the long-standing collaboration between Saab South Africa and HAL, which began in 2005 during the development of the Advanced Light Helicopter programme.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Saab will transfer technology to HAL, enabling the local production and maintenance of the LWS-310. This aligns with India’s Defence Procurement Procedure, strengthening HAL’s capabilities in Electronic Warfare systems. The agreement includes infrastructure development, technical training, and expertise transfer, ensuring long-term operational support.

Mats Palmberg, Chairman and Managing Director, Saab India, emphasized the company’s commitment to localization “By partnering with HAL, we ensure the security of supply for the Indian Armed Forces while supporting India’s push for indigenization in defence manufacturing.”

The LWS-310 enhances battlefield survivability by detecting, classifying, and responding to laser threats in real-time. Integrated into combat management systems, it improves situational awareness and self-protection for military vehicles.

With HAL’s Bengaluru-based expertise and Saab’s advanced defence technology, this collaboration marks another step towards self-reliance in India’s defence sector.
