Rolls-Royce has secured a major role in Canada’s River-class destroyer program, supplying critical systems for the first batch of ships. These vessels are part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, the most ambitious naval construction effort the country has undertaken since the Second World War.Each ship will be equipped with three major components from Rolls-Royce: the MT30 gas turbine for propulsion, the Mission Bay Handling System, and mtu Series 4000 diesel generators.
Bruce Lennie, Vice President of Government Relations at Rolls-Royce, commented, “We’re honored to contribute to the Royal Canadian Navy’s latest surface combatant program. Our power and handling technologies will enhance the operational strength of the fleet and support Canada’s maritime security goals.”
The plan includes up to 15 ships, with construction of the first three—known as Batch One—already underway as of April. Rolls-Royce has signed agreements with Irving Shipbuilding, the main contractor, for the MT30 turbines and the handling system. The diesel generator supply, managed by Canadian partner Wajax Power Systems, is in final stages of approval.
Irving Shipbuilding’s Vice President of Supply Chain and Quality, Lee Fromson, said, “We value our partnership with Rolls-Royce and trust in their reliable systems and deep expertise as we deliver these next-generation ships for Canada’s navy.”
The River-class design is based on the British Type 26 warship by BAE Systems, which is also being adapted for use by the United Kingdom and Australia as the Hunter Class Frigate. These international versions will also feature the same Rolls-Royce technologies.
