Rohde & Schwarz has introduced a new wideband modulated load pull solution, built on the R&S RTP oscilloscope. This solution expands beyond traditional vector network analyzer (VNA)-based systems, providing advanced non-linear device characterization capabilities. It enables load pull testing with wideband modulated signals, allowing for precise validation of key performance metrics, such as error vector magnitude (EVM) and adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR), critical for developing RF components used in next-generation wireless technologies.
The wideband modulated load pull solution leverages the R&S RTP oscilloscope to test RF frontend performance, offering an innovative alternative to traditional methods. The system integrates the R&S RTP084 oscilloscope with the R&S RTP-K98 load-pull option and the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator. This setup ensures accurate synchronization of phase and time for both forward and reverse wave measurements, which is essential for high-precision testing of RF components used in modern communication systems like 5G and Wi-Fi.
Unlike traditional load pull systems, which rely on a passive tuner to simulate load conditions, the R&S RTP-based solution eliminates the challenges posed by frequency response and group delay, especially for high-bandwidth signals typically above 100 MHz. The system’s advanced capabilities ensure superior performance and reliability when testing power amplifiers and other RF components that interact with antenna systems and dispersive impedances.
The R&S RTP oscilloscope is known for its exceptional signal integrity and high-speed data acquisition, with the ability to capture up to 750,000 waveforms per second. Its high precision and digital trigger systems enable fast and accurate measurements, essential for evaluating the performance of RF frontends across wide frequency ranges.
Markus Lörner, Market Segment Manager for RF & Microwave Components at Rohde & Schwarz, highlighted the significance of the new approach: “By incorporating the oscilloscope as the core instrument, we’ve created a solution that simplifies the verification of wideband RF frontends in real-world conditions, making it an invaluable tool for testing next-generation wireless devices.”
