Rohde & Schwarz introduces a new series of power analyzers, featuring three distinct models tailored to meet diverse measurement requirements for voltage, current, power, and total harmonic distortion across DC and AC sources. The lineup includes the R&S NPA101 power meter, offering fundamental measurements; the R&S NPA501 power analyzer, which enhances capabilities with advanced measurement functions and graphical analysis; and the R&S NPA701 compliance tester, designed with evaluation functions aligning with standards such as IEC 62301 and EN 50564 for power consumption, as well as EN 61000-3-2 for EMC harmonic emission testing.
The electrical characteristics of a device or module represent a crucial property measured throughout the electronics industry, spanning from development and compliance testing to production and service. The new R&S NPA family of power analyzers caters to these needs, offering power measurements ranging from 50 µW to 12 kW, potential differences from 1 mV to 600 V, and currents from 1 mA to 20 A. The models, including the R&S NPA501 and R&S NPA701, are equipped with interfaces for external probes or shunts, expanding the measurement range.
All three models boast a high sampling rate of 500 ksample/s, enabling the detection of even the shortest transient ripples in output. With a 16-bit resolution A/D converter, these analyzers ensure an accuracy of ± 0.05 % for both current and voltage readings. Featuring 23 standard measurements, including power, current, voltage, harmonic distortion, and energy, users can select up to ten measurements to be displayed simultaneously on the screen, with a refresh rate of 100 ms. The screen contents can be output as a graphic to the USB port, and values can be recorded over time for all measurements using the logging function.
The 5V measurement range provides exceptional resolution for both power and energy measurements. Additionally, a choice of Crest factor values of 1, 3, or 6 offers flexibility to capture all peaks and maximize dynamic range. Incorporating LAN and USB interfaces for remote control, the R&S NPA family ensures easy integration into systems. The R&S NPA501-G and R&S NPA701-G models also feature a GPIB interface. With a complete set of SCPI commands and drivers for LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and IVI.net, users can seamlessly integrate these instruments into their systems.
Moreover, the compact form and footprint allow for two instruments to be mounted side-by-side in a 19” rack for system use. The R&S NPA501 and R&S NPA701 models offer maximum and minimum peak values for voltage, current, and power. The PASS/FAIL function enables users to define up to six sets of maximum and minimum values to easily check whether the DUT’s output remains within the limits. Both instruments feature a graphical display mode, allowing users to view power-up inrush characteristics, voltage and current waveforms simultaneously, or a selection of parameters over longer periods in the time domain.
In the frequency domain, users can view up to the 50th harmonic, logarithmically if required, or as a table. The top model of the family, the R&S NPA701 compliance tester, provides step-by-step procedures in line with IEC 62301, EN 50564 for power consumption in low-power modes, and EN 61000-3-2 for EMC harmonic emissions. Users can perform compliance tests confidently, as the R&S NPA701 does not require a separate PC for these tests. Replacing the R&S HMC8015 power analyzers, the R&S NPA family offers a drop-in replacement and can be used together as required.
These instruments are part of the R&S Essentials portfolio, available from Rohde & Schwarz and selected distribution channel partners. Rohde & Schwarz will showcase the new R&S NPA family of power analyzers at the embedded world Exhibition in Nuremberg at booth 4-218 in hall 4.
