Denmark’s Rockwool, a global leader in insulation solutions, announced plans to invest Rs 550 crore in establishing its largest Indian factory in Tamil Nadu. This facility, located in Cheyyar, Tiruvannamalai district, about 90 km from Chennai, will be the company’s second manufacturing plant in India, complementing its existing unit in Dahej, Gujarat.

Rockwool, which reported revenues of €3.6 billion and operates in 40 countries, sees this investment as a significant step to enhance its presence in the Indian market. The new factory, expected to cover 56 acres within the SIPCOT Industrial Park, is set to be 25% larger than the Gujarat facility and is slated to begin operations in the first half of 2026.

Rockwool executives, including Board Chairman Thomas Kahler, Asia Managing Director Darryl Mathews, and India Business Unit Director Vinay Pratap Singh, met with Tamil Nadu’s Chief Secretary N Muruganandham to discuss the project. Mathews noted that Tamil Nadu’s economic leadership and strategic importance made it a natural choice for expansion.

The plant will produce approximately 50,000 tonnes of Rockwool’s stone wool insulation materials, which are known for being non-combustible, recyclable, and durable. The factory will create around 150 jobs and focus primarily on serving the domestic market, with the potential to significantly increase Rockwool’s revenue contribution from India.

While the Gujarat facility currently meets 90% of local demand, the new Tamil Nadu plant is expected to further strengthen Rockwool’s position in the Indian market, with a ground-breaking ceremony planned for November 2024.
