RIR Power Electronics Limited has announced the development of a high-voltage 25 kilovolt (kV), 120 kiloampere (kA) capacitor discharge semiconductor switch, marking a major step forward in India’s power electronics manufacturing capabilities. This newly developed thyristor-based switch represents a significant domestic achievement in high-voltage technology. Built entirely within India, the system supports the country’s broader push toward local manufacturing and reduced dependence on imported electronic components, while strengthening its position in the global power electronics sector.
At the heart of the system is a 125 mm silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) engineered to handle blocking voltages of up to 8 kV. Multiple SCR units are configured in series to deliver the required voltage capacity, enabling controlled discharge of very high current pulses with accuracy and stability.
The switch has undergone extensive validation at the company’s high-voltage testing facility in Halol, Gujarat. Performance testing under demanding operating conditions confirmed its reliability and suitability for critical applications requiring high-energy pulse control.
The product has been designed for deployment in sectors where precise pulse power delivery is essential. These include defence systems, where controlled high-current pulses are required, advanced medical technologies, and specialised energy-based applications such as directed energy systems.
With this development, RIR Power expands its portfolio in advanced semiconductor solutions while contributing to the creation of a stronger domestic ecosystem for high-power electronics. The company’s focus remains on developing technologies that meet both national requirements and global performance benchmarks.
Dr. Harshad Mehta, Non-Executive Chairman of RIR Power Electronics Limited, said the milestone reflects years of technical expertise and focused investment in semiconductor innovation. He noted that the introduction of this 25 kV switch highlights the company’s commitment to strengthening India’s manufacturing base and enhancing supply chain resilience.
RIR Power Electronics continues to invest in research, design, and manufacturing capabilities aimed at addressing complex industrial and strategic requirements. The company’s work in high-power semiconductor devices is aligned with India’s long-term objective of building self-sufficient, technology-driven industries capable of competing globally.
