REPLUS Engitech is advancing its indigenous Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology through a government-backed research and development programme focused on advanced battery thermal management. The initiative builds on the company’s existing capabilities in battery technology, product development, testing and intellectual property.
Thermal management has become increasingly important as energy storage systems grow in size and energy density. Higher charging and discharging rates, larger battery formats and demanding operating conditions require efficient control of heat to maintain safety, performance and battery life.
REPLUS is focusing its R&D programme on thermal-management technologies designed for Indian operating conditions. The company aims to develop solutions that can maintain suitable battery temperatures across different loads, ambient conditions and duty cycles while improving safety, efficiency and overall system life.
Hiren Pravin Shah, Managing Director and CEO, REPLUS Engitech, said the government-backed programme will help the company build on its existing technology base. “India’s energy storage opportunity is entering a phase where technology depth will be as important as manufacturing scale. At REPLUS, we have already built a foundation through our laboratories, testing capabilities, patents, products and a specialised pool of experts working on battery technology and deep-tech innovation,” Mr Shah said. He added that advanced thermal management will play an important role in the safety and performance of future storage systems and that the company aims to develop indigenous technologies suited to demanding applications.
REPLUS has developed battery products for automotive and industrial applications and is now expanding its technology roadmap towards sectors where reliability, temperature resilience and lifecycle performance are critical. These include defence, marine, railways and space applications.
The company’s R&D and testing infrastructure supports the evaluation of battery performance and thermal behaviour under controlled conditions. This provides a platform for moving technologies from research and prototyping towards validated products and commercial applications.
REPLUS is also strengthening its domestic manufacturing capabilities. Its Pune facility currently has an initial manufacturing capacity of 1 GWh, with expansion plans underway. The company intends to combine its R&D, testing, engineering, intellectual property and manufacturing capabilities to create an integrated technology and production base in India.
As renewable energy adoption grows, BESS systems are expected to play a greater role in grid stability and energy management. Future systems will need to deliver reliable performance, higher safety standards, longer operating life and consistent operation under varied environmental conditions.
REPLUS believes its focus on advanced thermal management can help address these requirements while strengthening its position in the development of next-generation battery technologies. The company’s technology roadmap extends beyond conventional energy storage and is aimed at applications where batteries must operate under extreme temperatures, high vibration, limited space and mission-critical conditions. Through continued investment in research, testing and product development, REPLUS aims to deepen India’s domestic capabilities in advanced batteries and energy storage while developing solutions for both established and emerging applications.
