RENK Group AG, a leading provider of propulsion solutions for military and industrial applications, has entered into a binding agreement to acquire David Brown Defence (DBD) from Stellex Capital Management, strengthening its position in the global defense transmission market and expanding its capabilities across naval and land defense sectors.
The acquisition represents a strategic step in RENK’s growth strategy focused on targeted expansion through mergers and acquisitions. David Brown Defence brings more than 100 years of experience in designing and manufacturing high-precision gearbox and transmission systems for defense applications. The company’s expertise will complement RENK’s existing portfolio while providing access to key naval programs across the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.
Dr Alexander Sagel, CEO of RENK Group AG, said, “With the acquisition of David Brown Defence, we are continuing our strategy of strengthening our leadership position in the defense sector through targeted investments. DBD provides us with access to important naval markets, expands our aftermarket opportunities and adds unique submarine propulsion expertise to our technology portfolio. We are committed to Huddersfield and the UK defense industry and look forward to welcoming the David Brown Defence team to RENK.”
Headquartered in Huddersfield, UK, David Brown Defence employs approximately 530 people and is a key supplier to major defense programs. The company has established a strong presence in naval and land defense markets, supporting critical platforms and long-term military modernization initiatives.
The acquisition will provide RENK access to significant naval programs, including the Global Combat Ship (GCS) program, covering platforms such as Type 26 frigates, Hunter Class frigates and River Class destroyers. David Brown Defence has a substantial order backlog and pipeline exceeding £700 million for the period from 2026 to 2030, creating long-term growth opportunities and strengthening RENK’s aftermarket business.
The transaction will expand RENK’s capabilities across three strategic defense areas. In surface naval applications, DBD will enhance RENK’s position as a supplier of marine propulsion transmission systems. In submarine propulsion, RENK will add advanced low-noise and low-vibration technology expertise, supporting future-generation underwater platforms. In land defense, the acquisition will broaden RENK’s armored vehicle portfolio through access to UK programs, including Challenger 2 and Boxer.
Rupert Pearce, National Armaments Director, said, “RENK Group’s acquisition of David Brown Defence is a strong endorsement of the UK’s industrial base and an important investment in a company whose technologies support critical naval and land defense platforms. The combination of DBD’s expertise with RENK’s global capabilities will strengthen supply chain resilience and support skilled employment.”
The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. Commercial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.
