ReNew Power is investing ₹22,000 crore to develop India’s largest renewable energy complex in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, marking its return to the state after a five-year gap. The project will be developed in phases and will include a 1,800 MW solar plant, a 1,000 MW wind energy facility, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 2 GWh. The company will also construct a 100-kilometre extra-high voltage transmission line to distribute the generated power.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 16 and is expected to be attended by Nara Lokesh, Minister for IT, Electronics, Communications, and Human Resources Development in Andhra Pradesh. Phase one of the project involves the installation of a 587 MW solar unit, a 250.8 MW wind facility, and a 415 MWh battery storage system. The remainder will be built in later stages.

This development represents the single largest renewable energy initiative in the country and is being undertaken under the state’s integrated clean energy policy introduced in October 2024. ReNew Power’s renewed commitment follows a pause in activity triggered by a 2019 policy shift under the previous administration, which reviewed and attempted to renegotiate existing power purchase agreements (PPAs). That move halted an estimated 5.2 GW in solar and wind projects, affecting multiple developers including ReNew, ACME Solar, Greenko, and others.

The policy changes had led to legal battles and a halt in capacity additions from 2019 to 2024. With a new government now in place, led by N Chandrababu Naidu, efforts have resumed to attract major green energy investments to the state. ReNew’s return is being viewed as a strong signal of investor confidence in the current administration’s approach to renewable energy development.

The company is one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, founded in 2011 by Sumant Sinha. It has quickly become a major player in the global clean energy space, focusing on large-scale solar and wind power generation. With a current operational capacity of over 15.6 GW as of August 2024,the company has been instrumental in driving India’s transition to renewable energy.

The company is committed to expanding its portfolio to 50 GW by 2030, in line with India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy. Additionally, ReNew is heavily investing in green hydrogen production, aiming to produce 1 million tonnes annually, which would significantly contribute to India’s green hydrogen ambitions. Through innovation, large-scale projects, and a commitment to sustainability, it is positioning itself as a leader in the renewable energy sector, not just in India but globally.
