Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions, has completed the acquisition of Pictorus, a software development company headquartered in Oakland, California. The move strengthens Renesas’ capabilities in model-based engineering and expands the functionality of its recently launched Renesas 365 platform.

The acquisition brings Pictorus’ cloud-native behavioral modeling technology into the Renesas ecosystem, enabling engineers to design, simulate and validate embedded systems through an integrated development environment. The technology enhances Renesas 365, a platform designed to unify electronics system development from concept and design through deployment and lifecycle management.

By incorporating behavioral modeling and simulation capabilities, Renesas aims to simplify embedded software development and accelerate product innovation across industries such as automotive, robotics and industrial automation. Engineers will be able to visually define system behavior using browser-based block diagrams, eliminating many of the complexities associated with traditional coding workflows.

Pictorus’ technology automatically transforms graphical system designs into executable embedded software written in Rust, a programming language recognized for its reliability and memory safety. The platform also supports interoperability with C, C++ and Python, allowing development teams to integrate new applications into existing environments while reducing development time.

The addition of Pictorus supports Renesas’ broader digitalization strategy and strengthens its collaboration with Altium in building a comprehensive Electronics System Design and Lifecycle Management Platform. The integrated environment is designed to create a continuous digital workflow, connecting system modeling, software development and device deployment within a single ecosystem.

Leigh Gawne, Vice President of R&D and Digital Industries, Software & Digitalization at Renesas, said the acquisition expands the company’s ability to deliver advanced system design capabilities. He noted that combining architectural and behavioral modeling will enable rapid virtual prototyping, faster evaluation of design alternatives and more efficient device selection processes.

Founded by engineers with extensive experience developing software for complex vehicle systems, Pictorus was created to address challenges associated with fragmented development tools and disconnected workflows. Its platform focuses on simplifying the design, debugging and deployment of embedded software through rapid iteration and model-based engineering techniques.

Pictorus Founder and CEO Chris Sullivan said joining Renesas provides an opportunity to scale a shared vision of connecting hardware, software and development processes within a unified platform. He added that the combined capabilities will help engineers build reliable embedded systems more efficiently while accelerating innovation across a wide range of applications.

Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Renesas operates in more than 30 countries with a workforce of approximately 22,000 employees. In FY2024, the company reported revenues of 1,348.5 billion yen and holds a robust intellectual property portfolio of nearly 20,000 patents and applications worldwide.

Since 2017, Renesas has expanded its global scale and technology portfolio through strategic acquisitions of semiconductor leaders including Intersil, IDT, and Dialog. In 2024, Renesas further strengthened its digitalization strategy with the acquisition of Altium, a U.S.-based software company specializing in PCB design, accelerating its efforts to deliver cutting-edge solutions for the next generation of electronic design.
