Reliance Power announced on Tuesday that its subsidiary, Reliance NU Suntech, has won a 930 MW solar energy project along with a 465 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The project will mark the second-largest deployment of grid storage batteries at a single site in Asia, following China, according to a company statement.

Reliance NU Suntech Private Ltd, a subsidiary of Reliance Power, has received a Letter of Award from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for its proposed 930 MW solar power project and a 465 MW/1860 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The competitive tariff ensures an assured supply of peak power for four hours daily, providing relief to DISCOMs that often rely on power exchanges during peak hours at the capped rate of Rs 10 per unit.

Reliance NU Suntech secured the 930 MW solar energy project in an e-reverse auction held on December 9, 2024. Under the tender’s terms, the company will install a minimum storage capacity of 465 MW/1860 MWh, powered by solar energy.

Reliance NU Suntech secured the largest individual allocation among five bidders competing for 2,000 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected solar power projects, coupled with 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh of energy storage systems. SECI will enter into a 25-year power purchase agreement with Reliance NU Suntech, with the procured solar power distributed to multiple DISCOMs across India. The project will be developed on a build-own-operate basis.

Reliance Power Limited, a key entity within the Reliance Group, is one of India’s top private sector power generation companies. Its operational portfolio includes 5,300 MW of capacity, highlighted by the 3,960 MW Sasan Power Ltd, the world’s largest integrated coal-based power plant.
