Reliance Power announced on Monday that its subsidiary, Reliance NU Energies, has won a 350 MW solar project, including a 175 MW/700 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), from SJVN Ltd. The BESS will be integrated with the solar project to provide a backup power supply of 175 MWh for up to four hours. The tariff for the project has been set at Rs 3.33/kWh, fixed for 25 years, placing it among the most competitively priced projects in India’s energy transition.
Reliance NU Energies won the largest allocation in SJVN’s competitive bidding process, securing 350 MW of solar capacity along with 175 MW/700 MWh of BESS. This addition will bring 600 MW of installed solar PV capacity and 700 MWh of energy storage to Reliance Power’s portfolio, reinforcing its leadership in renewable energy solutions.
With this project, Reliance Power’s total clean energy portfolio expands to 2.5 GW of solar capacity and 2.5 GWh of BESS, making the company the largest player in India’s integrated Solar + BESS segment. Reliance Power is awaiting the Letter of Award (LoA) from SJVN to proceed with the project.
This win marks a significant step in Reliance Power’s strategic shift towards renewable energy. The project is part of a larger 1,200 MW solar tender from SJVN, which includes 600 MW/2,400 MWh of BESS. The project is expected to provide guaranteed peak power supply to state distribution utilities (Discoms) through a four-hour daily discharge window.
The tender, which attracted 19 participants with 18 qualifying for the auction, was oversubscribed by more than four times, highlighting the growing interest in dispatchable renewable energy solutions. The project will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) framework, adhering to the Ministry of Power’s bidding guidelines.
In another major development, Reliance NU Suntech Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Power, has entered into a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). This deal is for Asia’s largest integrated solar and BESS project, which will have a solar capacity of 930 MW, paired with 465 MW/1,860 MWh of BESS.
The project, with a potential investment of up to Rs 10,000 crore, will operate at a fixed tariff of Rs 3.53 per kWh for 25 years, providing long-term revenue stability. Once completed, it will further enhance Reliance Power’s presence in the renewable energy market.
Reliance Power currently has an operational portfolio of 5,305 MW, including 3,960 MW from Sasan Power Ltd., the world’s largest integrated coal-based power plant. The new solar and BESS projects significantly strengthen Reliance Power’s position in the renewable energy sector, demonstrating its commitment to driving India’s transition to clean energy.
Reliance Power Limited, a key entity within the Reliance Group, stands among India’s prominent private sector power generation companies. The company operates a total capacity of 5,305 megawatts, which includes the 3,960-megawatt Sasan Power Limited—recognized as the world’s largest integrated coal-based power plant. For seven consecutive years, Sasan Power has maintained its position as the top-performing power plant in the country.
