Reliance Infrastructure Ltd has announced plans to set up a project for manufacturing explosives and small arms in Maharashtra. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to establish the project, which will cater to the requirements of the Indian defence forces and other industries.
The project will be set up at a special economic zone (SEZ) in Raigad district, with an initial investment of ₹1,200 crore. Reliance Infrastructure will develop the infrastructure and provide necessary facilities for the project.
The manufacturing facility will produce a range of products, including explosives, ammunition, and small arms. The project is expected to generate employment opportunities for over 1,000 people. “This project will contribute significantly to India’s defence manufacturing capabilities,” said Anil Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Infrastructure. “We are committed to supporting the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.”
The Maharashtra government has offered various incentives, including tax benefits and subsidies, to support the project. Reliance Infrastructure’s foray into defence manufacturing is seen as a strategic move, leveraging the government’s focus on indigenous defence production.
The project is expected to commence operations within the next 24 months, subject to necessary approvals and clearances.
