Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the dispatch of the first batch of export locomotives manufactured at the Marhowra facility in Bihar, operated by Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited. This venture, a collaboration between Indian Railways and Wabtec Corporation, reflects the government’s ongoing push to promote domestic manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ framework.
“We are honored that the Prime Minister flagged off these locomotives, reinforcing the commitment of both the central and Bihar state governments, along with Indian Railways, to foster long-term industrial growth in the region,” said Sujatha Narayan, Senior Vice President and regional head of Wabtec India.
The locomotives being exported are Evolution Series ES43ACi models, built to deliver 4,500 horsepower and optimized for energy efficiency and durability in hot climates. The engines, manufactured in the United States, will be used in Guinea as part of a 2024 order by Rio Tinto SimFer — a joint initiative involving Rio Tinto, the Republic of Guinea, and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings. These locomotives are intended for use on the TransGuinéen Railway, a key transportation corridor supporting the Simandou iron ore project in southeastern Guinea — one of Africa’s most significant mining and infrastructure undertakings.
“This achievement is the result of a global collaboration between public institutions and private partners since 2015,” Ms Narayan added. “These locomotives will help Guinea develop its natural resources and support economic progress through reliable rail infrastructure.”
The Marhowra factory, operational since 2018, is a modern manufacturing site built on global lean production methods. Its output capacity has scaled up to 170 locomotives annually, including 100 units for Indian Railways. The plant has also become a regional benchmark for workforce diversity, drawing skilled labor from Bihar and Jharkhand.
In addition to industrial production, the company has invested in the community through skill development initiatives. Over 600 women entrepreneurs have benefited from enterprise training programs, while local polytechnic students have received advanced welding training to improve job readiness.
Wabtec Corporation designs and delivers rail and industrial transport technologies. With a history stretching over 150 years, the company serves the freight, passenger, mining, marine, and industrial sectors. Its focus remains on building efficient, sustainable transport systems globally.
