Precision Without Lubrication: igus Components Power Solar Tracker for Maximum Efficiency

To provide mobile homes with independent power, CityFreighter has developed an innovative solar tracker that automatically adjusts to follow the sun, ensuring optimal energy generation. At the core of this system are lubrication-free motion plastics from igus, which enable precise and maintenance-free movement of the solar panel, even in challenging weather conditions.

Imagine finding the perfect lakeside spot, only to face power shortages because your solar panel remains fixed in one direction. The new Solartrackr from CityFreighter solves this problem with a mobile solar tracking system that continuously adjusts to the sun’s position, maximizing energy output. Equipped with an integrated anemometer, the system retracts in strong winds and can extend to a preset height to prevent collisions with roof hatches.

Priced at just €1,381 (excluding the solar flex panel), the Solartrackr offers a cost-effective alternative to premium models, such as a €5,000 California-made version. Weighing only 21 kg and supporting a large 340W panel, it is a lightweight and portable solution, ideal for mobile home owners. Beyond this, its potential extends to powering bus stops, remote locations, and off-grid applications.

igus components are the backbone of the Solartrackr’s movement system. The PRT-04 slewing ring bearing enables precise, lubrication-free rotation of the solar panels in any direction, while 3D-printed igus gears ensure accurate angular positioning for maximum energy absorption. The height adjustment mechanism features a robust stainless-steel trapezoidal lead screw paired with an iglidur J lead screw nut, providing consistent performance in varying weather conditions.

To enhance durability, CityFreighter has incorporated igus plain bearings and thrust washers made from iglidur J, iglidur G, and iglidur W300—all known for their high wear resistance and maintenance-free operation, making them ideal for demanding outdoor environments. “The igus components play a crucial role in our Solartrackr,” says Michael Schoening, CEO of CityFreighter Europe GmbH. “Their lubrication-free design, precision, and durability allow us to offer a reliable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective solution.”

Currently transitioning from prototype to full-scale production, CityFreighter is ramping up efforts for high-volume manufacturing. To accelerate this process, the company has launched a presale campaign on a crowdfunding platform, giving early adopters the opportunity to be among the first to own this cutting-edge solar tracking technology.
