Volkswagen Group’s battery company, PowerCo, and QuantumScape have agreed to work together to produce solid-state lithium-metal batteries. QuantumScape will allow PowerCo to mass produce these battery cells once they make enough technical progress and certain payments.
PowerCo will be able to make up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries per year using QuantumScape’s technology. This can be increased to 80 GWh per year, which is enough to power about one million vehicles annually. This partnership aims to quickly scale up production to meet the growing demand for better electric vehicle batteries.
The new agreement replaces an earlier joint venture between Volkswagen Group and QuantumScape to co-manufacture batteries. It combines QuantumScape’s advanced technology with PowerCo’s expertise in manufacturing. Both companies will work closely together, using a team of experts to speed up the production of these new batteries.
QuantumScape is a company focused on developing next-generation solid-state lithium-metal batteries for electric vehicles. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in San Jose, California, QuantumScape aims to revolutionize energy storage with its innovative technology, which promises higher energy density, faster charging times, and improved safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The company’s solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte, eliminating the risk of fire and enhancing battery performance.
QuantumScape has attracted significant attention and investment from leading automotive manufacturers, including a long-term partnership with Volkswagen, to accelerate the commercialization of its groundbreaking battery technology.
