With the mid-life facelift of the current-generation Porsche 718, the iconic nameplate was revived for the brand’s mid-engined two-seaters. When the 718 Boxster made its debut in January 2016, it sparked some controversy among enthusiasts due to the shift from the traditional flat-six engine to a flat-four layout for most of the range.
Despite this, the top-tier 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 retained the beloved 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine, producing an impressive 500 horsepower. In 2022, Porsche India introduced the 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS, priced at Rs 1.46 crore and Rs 1.49 crore respectively. These models featured a detuned version of the flat-six engine found in the top-end Spyder and GT4, delivering 400 horsepower.
Shortly after, Porsche launched the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, priced at Rs 2.54 crore. While the Macan and Cayenne models dominated the India’s sales, accounting for approximately 63 percent of their total sales in the first half of the year, the 718 models still contributed to the overall sales figure of 489 units during the same period.
Looking ahead, the company has announced that the next generation of the 718 Cayman and Boxster will be fully electric. Expected to debut in 2025, these all-electric models will be produced alongside the current combustion-engine variants at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant.
The upcoming 718 EVs will be built on a dedicated electric sports car platform designed to replicate the mid-engined characteristics of their combustion counterparts. This new platform is also anticipated to serve as the foundation for future Audi and Lamborghini models. Porsche India has indicated that bookings for the electric 718s will open sometime in 2025.
