Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the critical importance of resilient supply chains for the economy, urging enhanced investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing during his address at the SEMICON 2024 conference near the national capital on Wednesday.

Highlighting lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, Modi stressed the need for robust supply chains to prevent disruptions. “The resilience of the supply chain is very important,” he stated. “India is working to strengthen this across various sectors.”

The pandemic revealed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, particularly in semiconductor production, which is essential for electronics ranging from smartphones to electric vehicles and AI technologies. Modi underscored India’s commitment to mitigating such risks by attracting investments in chip manufacturing.

“India aims to have an Indian-made chip in every device worldwide,” Modi declared. He pointed to India’s reform-driven policies, stable business environment, and growing technological market as key factors that make the country an attractive destination for semiconductor investments.

Describing the government’s efforts to boost the sector, the PM highlighted the “Three-D Power”—reformist policies, a growing manufacturing base, and a technologically advanced market—that will drive India’s chip-making industry forward.

“India today inspires global confidence. When the chips are down, you can count on India,” Modi asserted, noting that over ₹1.5 lakh crore in investments have already been committed to semiconductor projects, with many more in development.
