Pioneer India is in advanced discussions with several automotive electronics manufacturers to begin producing in-car entertainment systems and safety products like dash cameras in India, according to company officials.
“We plan to localize all our products in India, and we are currently in active negotiations with potential manufacturing partners,” said Aniket Kulkarni, Managing Director of the company, in an interview with a magazine on Tuesday.
The Indian subsidiary of Japan’s Pioneer Corporation offers a range of car entertainment products, including stereos, speakers, woofers, and amplifiers, as well as accessories like noise-dampening sheets. The company recently introduced smart dash cameras to the Indian market.
Pioneer India’s products are available in both the aftermarket and as OEM-approved parts through authorized dealers. The company is also exploring direct supply agreements with car manufacturers to have Pioneer products factory-installed in vehicles.
While some of the company’s products are designed at its R&D centers in Gurugram and Bengaluru, manufacturing currently takes place in countries like Thailand and Vietnam. Pioneer India expects to begin local production next year, initially through outsourcing contracts and potentially through joint ventures for in-house manufacturing.
The company also plans to use India as a manufacturing hub for exports to other global markets, including Japan and the United States, Pioneer’s largest markets.”We’ll start with the India program, but to make manufacturing viable, we’ll need significant volumes. As we scale up production for India, we’ll also be targeting global markets,” said Siva Subramanian, Chief Products Officer.
While setting up manufacturing in India will require significant investment, the company has not disclosed the exact amount it plans to invest.
