Organic Recycling Systems Limited (ORSL), a leading Indian cleantech enterprise known for pioneering waste valorisation and circular economy solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). The collaboration aims to drive research and innovation in biomass valorisation, biochar development, and advanced environmental technologies. The partnership combines ORSL’s industrial experience with the academic excellence of IIT Roorkee’s Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) to accelerate progress in renewable energy and carbon-neutral technologies.
Under this MoU, the two institutions will work together across several key areas: biomass characterization and conversion, biochar and activated carbon development, and torrefaction of biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW). The collaboration will also include training programs, internships, and joint research projects to nurture technical expertise and strengthen the industry-academia ecosystem in renewable energy. These initiatives are expected to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy.
Speaking about the partnership, Sarang Bhand, Managing Director of ORSL, said, “Our collaboration with IIT Roorkee is a major step in advancing R&D in biomass and waste valorisation. Together, we aim to enhance biochar production and torrefaction processes that contribute directly to India’s clean energy and carbon neutrality goals.”
Prof Vivek Kumar Malik, Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy at IIT Roorkee, added, “This partnership reflects our shared vision of converting research excellence into scalable industrial applications that address environmental challenges.” Prof Dr Sonal K Thengane from IIT Roorkee’s HRED Department noted, “Through this collaboration, we aim to develop replicable models for biomass and MSW management across India.”
Founded in 2008, Organic Recycling Systems Limited is an environmental engineering company specializing in sustainable waste management and circular economy solutions. The company operates India’s first municipal solid waste (MSW) plant based on a patented anaerobic biomethanation process, recognized by the Government of India under the National Master Plan.
Its flagship project in Solapur, Maharashtra, converts biodegradable waste into Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and organic manure, showcasing a successful circular economy model. ORSL manages a processing capacity of 400 tonnes per day, with operations spanning project development and technology licensing, bio-based product manufacturing, and consulting services. Recognized under the Swachh Bharat Mission for innovation and operational excellence, ORSL continues to expand its impact through collaborations with premier institutions such as IIT Bombay, AGH University (Poland), and the University of Birmingham (U.K.), reinforcing its leadership in sustainable environmental technologies.
