onsemi (Nasdaq: ON) has signed a multi-year agreement with Volkswagen Group. onsemi will be the main supplier of a complete power box solution for Volkswagen’s next-generation electric cars. This power box uses silicon carbide technology and can be used in all types of electric cars, from high-power to low-power ones. This helps Volkswagen have a single, efficient platform for all their cars.
Hassane El-Khoury, the president and CEO of onsemi, said the new system can be customized for different cars without losing performance and will reduce costs. The power box uses onsemi’s EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs. These can handle more power in a smaller size and reduce energy loss.
The system also has three integrated half-bridge modules to manage heat better, making electric cars more efficient and allowing them to go further on a single charge. Volkswagen Group can also easily upgrade to future silicon carbide platforms with this solution.
Dirk Große-Loheide from Volkswagen said onsemi’s supply chain and production capabilities convinced them to partner with onsemi. Till von Bothmer, another Volkswagen executive, said onsemi’s silicon carbide factories in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. provide a strong and reliable supply.
onsemi is also investing in expanding its silicon carbide manufacturing in the Czech Republic. This will create a full production facility in Europe, strengthening Volkswagen’s supply chain and speeding up manufacturing.
