Himachal Pradesh, a frontrunner in electric mobility, continues to embrace sustainable transportation with its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), which recently celebrated 50 years of service, invited bids for 327 electric buses—297 buses of 9 meters and 30 buses of 12 meters for outright purchase. Following a thorough technical evaluation, Olectra and Switch Mobility were shortlisted, with Olectra emerging as the lowest bidder. HRTC is expected to finalize the order soon to ensure swift deployment of these buses to meet the growing needs of its citizens.
HRTC’s first phase of electric bus deployment began in 2017, when 25 Olectra buses were introduced for the Kullu-Manali-Rohtang Pass route, marking a world-first electric bus service at an altitude of 13,000 feet. These buses have successfully navigated the mountainous terrain, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in the region.
The upcoming Olectra buses, featuring innovations like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), air suspension, disc brakes with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and improved maneuverability, will enhance the transportation experience in Himachal Pradesh.
The 9-meter buses offer a range of 180 km per charge with seating for 30 passengers, while the 12-meter buses can travel up to 250 km per charge, accommodating 37 passengers in luxury seats. Olectra Greentech Limited, part of the MEIL Group and a pioneer in electric bus manufacturing in India, was established in 2000 and continues to lead the charge in sustainable public transport.
