Ola Cell Technologies (OCT), the wholly owned battery manufacturing subsidiary of Ola Electric, has received Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for its indigenously developed 46100 Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cylindrical battery cell, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to build a self-reliant advanced battery manufacturing ecosystem. With this achievement, Ola Electric becomes the first Indian company to secure BIS certification for a locally developed battery cell in the 46100 cylindrical format. The certification reinforces the company’s growing capabilities in research, engineering, product development and large-scale manufacturing of advanced battery technologies within the country.

The certification has been granted under IS 16046 (Part 2):2018 / IEC 62133-2:2017, validating that the battery cell meets stringent national and international safety requirements for portable sealed secondary lithium cells. In addition to BIS approval, the 46100 LFP battery cell has successfully qualified under IS 16893 Parts 2 and 3 as well as the globally recognised UN 38.3 transportation safety standard. These certifications confirm that the cell has successfully completed comprehensive electrical, mechanical, environmental, abuse, reliability and transportation safety evaluations required for commercial deployment.

Developed with significant localisation across raw materials, components, engineering and manufacturing processes, the battery cell reflects Ola Electric’s continued investment in strengthening India’s domestic battery technology ecosystem and reducing dependence on imported cell technologies.

To obtain BIS certification, the 46100 LFP cell underwent an extensive series of tests at a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited facility. The evaluation included thermal abuse, external short circuit, abnormal charging, forced discharge, vibration, impact resistance, crush tests, mechanical shock, free-fall assessments, altitude simulation and continuous low-rate charging, among several other performance and safety validations.

An Ola Electric spokesperson said the certification represents another important step in the company’s mission to build India’s most advanced electric mobility and energy storage ecosystem. The spokesperson noted that the successful qualification reflects the strength of the company’s in-house research, engineering and manufacturing capabilities while creating a strong technological foundation for future electric vehicle and stationary energy storage applications.

The newly certified LFP platform expands Ola Electric’s in-house battery portfolio alongside its previously introduced NMC-based 4680 Bharat Cell. Built on a common 46-series architecture, the two battery chemistries provide the flexibility to support a wide range of electric mobility and energy storage applications based on performance requirements.

The 46100 LFP cell delivers an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg and has been engineered to operate across a broad temperature range while offering a projected lifecycle exceeding 4,000 charge-discharge cycles. Its design places equal emphasis on safety, durability, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for applications where long service life and reliability are critical.

Ola Electric has also continued expanding its indigenous battery capabilities through real-world deployment of its 4680 Bharat Cells, with thousands of electric vehicles powered by these batteries collectively covering millions of kilometres across India. The operational performance of these vehicles provides valuable validation of the company’s battery technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The company’s Gigafactory remains central to its long-term strategy of building a fully integrated battery manufacturing ecosystem in India. By developing both LFP and NMC battery technologies domestically, Ola Electric aims to increase local value addition, support future electric mobility growth, strengthen energy storage solutions and contribute to India’s broader objective of achieving energy independence.
