NXP Semiconductors has introduced the SAF9800, a new single-chip automotive radio and audio processor designed to simplify infotainment system development while enabling advanced in-vehicle audio capabilities. The new solution combines analog AM/FM radio reception, high-performance audio processing and artificial intelligence (AI)-based audio technologies into a single device, helping vehicle manufacturers reduce hardware complexity and accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles.
The SAF9800 integrates functions that have traditionally required multiple radio and audio components into one scalable processor, allowing automakers to simplify system architecture, reduce component count and support a wide range of vehicle platforms with a common hardware solution. One of the key features of the new processor is its AI and machine learning-enabled acoustic source separation technology.
The system can distinguish important sounds such as voice commands, emergency vehicle sirens and potential mechanical faults from background cabin noise in real time. This improves voice recognition accuracy and supports advanced safety and driver assistance functions, particularly in noisy vehicle environments where conventional filtering techniques often struggle to deliver reliable performance.
The processor is equipped with a HiFi 5 audio digital signal processor (DSP) featuring integrated neural-network processing capabilities along with NXP’s hardware-based biquad accelerators. According to the company, the architecture delivers more than ten times the audio processing performance of previous-generation products. This enables advanced applications including intelligent noise reduction, voice recognition, sound classification and adaptive in-cabin audio experiences powered by AI-based algorithms.
The SAF9800 has also been designed for software-defined vehicle architectures, allowing manufacturers to configure, upgrade and customise radio and audio functions through software rather than hardware modifications. This provides greater flexibility for introducing new features and meeting changing customer requirements over the vehicle lifecycle.
John van den Braak, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Infotainment and Audio Systems Product Line at NXP Semiconductors, said the automotive industry is rapidly shifting towards integrated, software-defined infotainment platforms. He noted that the SAF9800 combines established technologies such as broadcast radio and digital audio with AI-powered processing capabilities to improve the in-car experience while supporting emerging applications including in-cabin audio sensing and functional audio systems. The integrated design also helps automakers simplify development and scale production across multiple global vehicle platforms.
The launch comes as vehicle manufacturers face changing regulatory requirements and increasing technical challenges related to automotive radio systems. Proposed regulations in several markets continue to emphasise the importance of maintaining access to AM and FM broadcast services, while the growing adoption of electric vehicles has introduced new challenges related to electromagnetic interference affecting radio reception.
To address these issues, the SAF9800 supports NXP’s latest EVAM-lite AM denoising technology, which reduces interference in the AM frequency band commonly generated by electric vehicle powertrains. The integrated solution enables manufacturers to meet evolving regulatory requirements while maintaining reliable radio performance in both conventional and electric vehicles.
The SAF9800 automotive radio and audio processor has been available since May 2026. NXP is also providing development tools, software support and engineering resources to help customers accelerate product development and bring next-generation infotainment systems to market more efficiently.
