NTPC, the state-owned power generation company, has collaborated with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This initiative aims to deliver a reliable power supply through Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the project via video conference on Thursday.

According to NTPC, the Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid is designed for autonomous operation, utilizing hydrogen as a means of energy storage. The system is expected to generate 200kW of power continuously throughout the year.

“This initiative will replace existing diesel generators in off-grid Army areas, ensuring a sustainable energy supply even under harsh winter conditions, where temperatures can plummet to -30°C at an elevation of 4,400 meters. NTPC will oversee the maintenance of the project for a period of 25 years,” the company noted.

Taking advantage of Ladakh’s high solar irradiance and low temperatures, this project aims to foster the production and use of green energy, reducing dependence on fuel logistics and improving self-sufficiency in remote regions that face road connectivity challenges.

Additionally, NTPC has launched a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh as part of its commitment to renewable energy goals and carbon neutrality in the region. The company is also working on setting up a hydrogen fueling station and solar plant, alongside five fuel cell buses for operation on city routes in Leh.

NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, is India’s largest power utility company, established in 1975. Headquartered in New Delhi, NTPC is primarily engaged in the generation of electricity through thermal, hydro, and renewable sources.

The company has a significant presence in the power sector, with a total installed capacity exceeding 67,000 MW across more than 70 power plants. NTPC is a pioneer in promoting sustainable energy practices and has made substantial investments in renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power, as part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.

Additionally, NTPC is actively involved in research and development initiatives focused on enhancing energy efficiency and exploring innovative technologies, such as green hydrogen. The company plays a crucial role in India’s energy security and economic development, contributing to the nation’s goal of expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity.
