NTPC Renewable Energy Wins SECI Bid to Develop Solar Power and Storage System

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Ltd, has secured a 500 MW solar power project through an e-reverse auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on December 9, 2024. The project is part of SECI’s 2000 MW ISTS-connected Solar PV Power Projects tender and includes the installation of an Energy Storage System (ESS) with a total capacity of 1000 MW/4000 MWh.

The awarded capacity was achieved at a tariff of ₹3.52 per kWh. Under the tender terms, the company will also develop a 250 MW/1000 MWh energy storage facility alongside the solar project. The Letter of Award (LOA) for the project is anticipated soon.

NTPC Green Energy is the largest public sector entity focused on renewable energy (excluding hydro), boasting an operational portfolio of solar and wind assets across more than six states. This geographic spread helps minimize risks related to location-specific variability in energy generation.

As of September 2024, NTPC Green Energy has an installed capacity of 3,220 MW from solar projects and 100 MW from wind projects, supported by long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) averaging 25 years. Additionally, the company has 13,576 MW of contracted and awarded projects and a further 9,175 MW in the development pipeline.

NTPC has set an ambitious goal of reaching 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by FY2032. Currently, the company has 3.5 GW of installed renewable capacity and more than 28 GW under development.

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, spearheads renewable energy initiatives for India’s largest power producer. Focused on accelerating the nation’s transition to sustainable power, NGEL is actively developing solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects. As part of India’s ambitious 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030, NGEL also explores cutting-edge technologies like green hydrogen, energy storage systems, and waste-to-energy solutions. By integrating sustainability into its operations, NTPC Green Energy aims to ensure a cleaner energy future, contributing significantly to the country’s energy security and carbon reduction goals.
