In a groundbreaking move that sets a new standard for innovation in the mining sector, NMDC Limited, India’s largest iron ore producer, has announced the creation of a dedicated ‘Transformation and Innovation’ vertical at its Hyderabad headquarters. This strategic initiative is poised to propel NMDC into a future marked by advanced technologies and enhanced operational efficiencies, reinforcing its leadership in the steel and mining industry.
Since its founding in 1958, NMDC has been at the forefront of the mining industry, consistently pushing the boundaries of innovation and operational excellence. With the establishment of the new vertical, NMDC reaffirms its commitment to maintaining its pioneering status by adapting to the dynamic industrial landscape and driving significant technological advancements.
The ‘Transformation and Innovation’ vertical is designed to integrate and accelerate NMDC’s Vision 2030, which aims to achieve a formidable production capacity of 100 million tonnes. The new department will be led by a Chief General Manager (CGM) and includes a team of seasoned executives who will directly collaborate with NMDC’s Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) and other top management, ensuring agile and effective decision-making.
Focused on leveraging cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, this unique vertical will manage the concept of commissioning ambitious projects under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. By collaborating with the private sector, NMDC aims to share investment burdens and enhance long-term operational efficiencies, thereby reducing risks and expediting its expansion goals.
Projects managed by the department will encompass transformative initiatives, such as developing cross-country conveying systems, buffer stockyards, and automated sampling technologies, with an investment projection of Rs 8,000 to 10,000 crore over the next 3-5 years. Amitava Mukherjee, CMD (Additional Charge) of NMDC, emphasized the vertical’s role in driving innovation, stating, “This department will not only address current challenges but will also equip us to navigate the evolving ecosystem of the mining industry with state-of-the-art technological solutions.”
Introducing revolutionary systems like the RopeCon Conveyor System and in-pit crushing & conveying systems underscores NMDC’s dedication to sustainability and operational excellence. By focusing on transformative projects and continuous improvements, NMDC is not just preparing for the future but actively shaping it, aiming to position itself as a global leader in mining innovation.
