NMDC Limited has taken a major step in enhancing Dantewada’s cultural and tourism potential by developing a scenic ghat and pitching area at the confluence of the Shankini and Dankini rivers. This ₹298 lakh project, part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, is already making a significant impact by boosting local tourism, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and supporting national initiatives like DekhoApnaDesh and Swadesh Darshan.

Dantewada, known for the revered Danteshwari Temple—one of the 52 Shakti Peethas—has long been a pilgrimage destination, especially during Chaitra Navratri, Sharadiya Navratri, FagunMela, and the grand Dussehra celebrations. Despite its rich cultural and natural heritage, the region had yet to realize its full tourism potential. The newly built ghat is not only improving access to the serene riverside but also acting as a catalyst for local economic and social development.

A standout aspect of this initiative is the positive change it has brought to the lives of local tribal communities. These families, traditionally dependent on forest resources, now see the surrounding natural assets as sources of sustainable income rather than exploitation. With the rise in tourism, these communities are increasingly participating in eco-tourism, offering local crafts, and providing services to visitors. This shift is reducing their reliance on forest exploitation and promoting environmentally sustainable livelihoods.

Rajvijay Tandon, Executive Engineer of the Rural Engineering Service Division in Dantewada, highlighted the significance of the project, saying, “The construction of the retaining wall and ghats in Dantewada, backed by NMDC’s CSR initiatives, has transformed the area into a hub for religious and community activities. Additionally, the retaining wall ensures that there will be no adverse impact on the river in the future.”

As part of another community-focused CSR effort, NMDC has also supported the MadkamKutmaSamaj in Dantewada by providing tent house materials, further strengthening community infrastructure and preserving local traditions. These initiatives underscore NMDC’s commitment to “Developing with the community, not just around it,” emphasizing the importance of holistic and sustainable growth.
