NLC India Ltd (NLCIL), a major lignite-based power producer, plans to invest approximately ₹50,000 crore to boost its renewable energy capacity from 1.43 GW to 10.11 GW. The company has established NLC India Green Energy Limited (NIGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary focused exclusively on renewable energy.

This investment will help NLCIL achieve a renewable energy portfolio that constitutes 50% of its total planned capacity, significantly contributing to India’s renewable energy goals and the broader objective of reaching ‘net zero’ emissions by 2070.

India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, as outlined at COP 26, underscores the need for such large-scale investments. NIGEL will enhance its portfolio through competitive bidding and by seizing new opportunities in the green energy sector. Presently, 2 GW of renewable energy projects are in progress.

This initiative will not only reduce the reliance on conventional energy sources and decrease coal imports but also ensure a reliable power supply nationwide. NLCIL aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its generation portfolio from 50% by 2030 to 77% by 2047, positioning itself to meet net zero targets by 2070. The company anticipates that by 2030, the energy landscape will evolve significantly, leading to no further additions in thermal power capacity.

NLC India Ltd, formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation, is a government-owned energy company based in India. Specializing in the mining of lignite and power generation, the company plays a critical role in the country’s energy sector.

NLC operates several lignite mines and thermal power stations across Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and other states, contributing significantly to India’s electricity grid. In recent years, the company has diversified its portfolio by expanding into renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, aligning with India’s push towards clean energy. NLC India Ltd is a key player in the country’s efforts to enhance energy security and promote sustainable development.
