NLC India Ltd (NLCIL), a state-owned enterprise, has produced 12.34 billion units of green energy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by one crore tonne, according to a statement from the coal ministry. Traditionally a lignite-based power generator, NLCIL is now aiming to achieve 10,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The company has already established 1,380 MW of solar power and 51 MW of wind energy capacity as part of its shift towards clean energy. To drive this expansion, NLCIL has created two new subsidiaries: NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL), focused on asset monetisation, and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL), which will lead clean energy efforts.
Additionally, NLCIL’s membership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) highlights its dedication to environmental sustainability in the coal industry. With a current renewable capacity of 1.4 GW, NLCIL plans to quadruple this by 2030, with major projects underway in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Assam.
In a recent development, NLCIL signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Telangana’s state discoms for 200 MW of solar power under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme, further solidifying its renewable energy ambitions.
NLC India Ltd, formerly known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation, is a state-owned company primarily engaged in the mining of lignite and the generation of thermal power. Headquartered in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, it has diversified into renewable energy, with a growing portfolio of solar and wind power projects.
As part of its commitment to clean energy, NLCIL aims to achieve 10,000 MW of renewable capacity by 2030, adding to its current renewable capacity of 1.4 GW. The company plays a crucial role in India’s energy sector, supplying electricity to various states while also focusing on sustainability through initiatives like solar energy development and carbon reduction efforts. Its involvement in the International Solar Alliance further underscores its dedication to green energy and environmental responsibility.
